FOOD FOR THOUGHT

hOMe foR tHE hoLIDAYS

As I’m writing this blog I am plopped on the couch in my Santa jammies and grandma sweater. COZY and quite cute! I am watching “Christmas Vacation” for the second time in a week completely stuffed from a yummy Christmas dinner with my Italian family.

After taking the red-eye back home the other night, exhausted and barely able to keep my eyes open my first stop was to visit my papa. I hold a very special place in my heart for him. Not only did he welcome me with a warm hug and a big smile he made the biggest dinner for my and my family ( per usual) which included chicken, potatoes, pork, salad, eggplant Parmigiano, marinated eggplant, red peppers and an Italian dessert that we’ve had ever since I was a little wee squirt called skililies. I’m enjoying the holidays thus far reminding myself to remain calm during the hustle and bustle of it all and most importantly relax. I hope everyone has a very happy Holiday with all of your celebrations.  See you in 2011. – Christina XO

FOOD FOR THOUGHT

AmeriCanO

I met my friend at GENE CAFE yesterday on Main Street. Aside from the gal at the counter viciously piling up the dish wear by our ears, it is by far one of my favorite places for an Americano. I don’t drink tons of coffee, but I usually make my own Americano once a day on the stove top. First thing in the morning, the smell of fresh Italian beans (I’m biased) grinded to perfection. YUM to the MY. But of course when I am out and about I love to treat myself to an Americano. There is something about sitting at a cafe with it, reading or writing in your own space or walking around the city with one. I think it’s comforting and is a perfect partner for strolling with on a cold day. I’m not saying it should replace your partner but you get my drift.

Everyone has their favorite place and my top 5 favorite places for a delicious Americano are:

1. URBAN FARE

2. GENE CAFE

3. PRADO

4. MILANO

5. BRIOCHE

Remember how I was loving red lipstick and hoping to one day purchase a CHANEL tube of luscious red. Well…… I did! From the new CHANEL lipstick collection (CHANEL Rouge Allure Lipstick).  I had a gift certificate and I used it on a beautiful shade of red that I probably wouldn’t have bought ($$$). The woman at the counter says, “WOW, You Own It”. I thought…”Yeah,  you’re just saying that cause you want me to buy it”. Then I took a look closer and said aloud,  “BOOM! I DO OWN IT!..Heyyyyyyyy Oohhhhh”. I put it on and my blue eyes almost popped out! She gave me a “What A Weirdo” look, But hey! Nothing new here. At least I made her laugh. Today is the 30th anniversary of John Lennon’s death. I don’t know anyone who doesn’t admire this talented man. Let’s raise a glass to John Lennon and listen to one of your favorite Lennon songs. Here are a few of my cherished quotes: – Christina XO

“My role in society, or any artist’s or poet’s role, is to try and express what we all feel. Not to tell people how to feel. Not as a preacher, not as a leader, not as a reflection of us all.”

“Everything is clearer when you’re in love”

“I believe in everything until it’s disproved. So I believe in fairies, the myths, dragons. It all exists, even if it’s in your mind. Who’s to say that dreams and nightmares aren’t as real as the here and now”

“If being an egomaniac means I believe in what I do and in my art or music then in that respect you can call me that…I believe in what I do and I’ll say it.”

“Life is what happens when you are busy making other plans.”

For those who know me, I’m a very nostalgic person. You give me a picture of when I was 4, I’d probably start to cry. Show me a picture of my grandparents dancing like Ginger Rogers and Fred Astaire …TEARS. One of my favorite things to do when I go back home is flip through the  many albums that my dad put together over the years. I’m not talking about just one or two but A LOT. They range from the early 70’s (my favorite) to the present day. I look at the days of when I was a wee little peanut, the things my family did, what I wore, old class photos, who we spent time with and always wipe the drool from my mouth as I gaze at the cool old vintage clothing that I wish had been saved for me. I laugh at the fact that my brother and I looked like twin boys and savour every moment down memory lane. I love it! No one can take that lane away. It will always be there and I will continue to cherish the special memories I’ve had. “In My Life” by the Beatles is a very special song to me. I think anyone who hears it can attach their own personal memories to it. I was just listening to it when it reminded me of when my best friend who I consider my sister, Julie (sevendollarpants) made me a video montage for my 16th birthday which were pictures of us through the previous pubescent years. This one is by far one of my all time favorites. This picture was taken at my birthday party. I’m a few years older than Julie. There was a moment in our childhood when I asked her mom, “Can I hold the baby? Here,we are both sporting fashionable plastic rings and bracelets. I, in my Strawberry Shortcake slippers, tomato pants, and heart T-shirt smiling with the gap between my teeth and the cowlick  in my hair. And Julie a.k.a “Noopy” sheepishly grinning to the side, her cute little mushroom cut hair  and sporting a tomato jumper and fuzzy red socks. We probably planned our outfits. Ahhhh the good ol days – ……..I can’t help but laugh every time I look at this picture. – Christina XO
